Entertaining

We had a great time at Mom’s birthday dinner. Jessica did a great job organizing everyone to get us there and the food was great as usual. Sid was entertaining us with some pre-dinner music. She loves to perform.
This week at school someone called her shorty, she was sobbing when Britnie picked her up. I’m preparing for this to happen more as she gets older. When I drop her off and she meets up with her friends, it blows me away how much bigger they all are standing next to her. Some of them pick her up and squeeze her like a baby. We’ve tried to help her understand how unimportant size is (unless her hobbies become basketball and tree climbing), but she’s starting to realize other kids think it’s strange.
I remember the first time that I realized that I was different from the kids around me. In 1st grade I realized that not everyone sang to themselves and I got teased for it. It became worse in 2nd grade. That was when I learned to keep my mouth shut (for the most part.) I don’t understand why kids have to be so mean. I guess we will just have to teach her to be faster, smarter, and kinder than those around her to make up for this non-important difference. If there was a way I could take the pain she will feel away, I would in a heartbeat.
Children try to think of nicknames to call one another and don’t intend to be mean. I don’t know how you can explain to our sweetheart that children give nicknames to their friends. Also, boys tease girls because they like them. They ignore the ones they don’t like.
When she gets older she will see that being short can have its advantages. You can date all the boys because you aren’t taller than any of them. She can bat those cute eyelashes and ask a boy to reach something for her. It worked for me. Look at the handsome husband I ended up with!
