Five Flavors of Ice Cream
Dec 4th, 2007 by jeremy
Breyers used to be the perfect ice cream. It was all natural, something you rarely see in the freezer at a grocery store. You could usually count the number of ingredients on one hand. It’s still the best, but Unilever bought them and messed it up by adding an additional ingredient, Tara Gum. Still considered natural according to Unilever, but it did change the texture slightly. I’ll still choose it every time if I have the choice. Plus it seems to go on sale at Albertsons every other week.
- Breyers Natural Vanilla
- Breyers French Vanilla
- Dreyers Vanilla Bean
- Breyers Cookies and Cream
- Ben and Jerry Vanilla
Cookies and Cream is lucky it made it in, my taste in ice cream is very plain. When I was growing up, we always had these big tubs of vanilla ice cream in the freezer downstairs, and instead of getting sick of the flavor, I guess I lost interest in anything else. Breyers Cookies and Cream is an exception, it’s as perfect as an ice cream with stuff in it can be. When Britnie and I first got married, one of our favorite desserts was vannila ice cream with Oreas we had crumbled ourselves. Breyers matches that pretty well.
My least favorite? Plain chocolate anything.
More lists of five here.

We had vanilla all the time since everyone could “dress it up” and make it whatever flavor they liked. I still can’t easily eat a flavored ice cream that accompanies another dessert, such as cake or pie. It just seems to mask the flavor of the other treat.
John and I ate a quart of vanilla ice cream to win a contest a few years back, and neither one of us can eat vanilla alone since. We’re quite fond of Ben and Jerry’s flavors though. I can’t eat ice cream in the amounts we ate as kids though.
I’m certainly no purist. Chocolate peanut butter, chocolate with brownies, moose tracks…
But I can be a snob. Baskin Robbins is my favorite.
Ben and Jerry’s has a new flavor that I tried at work, it’s the Stephen Colbert flavor. It’s pretty good, it has pieces of waffle cone mixed in.
Plain vanilla is too boring for me. I have to dress it up with something. I still like chocolate with things in it.
very interesting, but I don’t agree with you
