- Rape is the only form of violent crime in which Utah exceeds the national average. 8% of these attacks are done by a stranger, most commonly by someone they knew but not a family member or intimate acquaintance. Many victims were concerned that their family or friends might find out about the attack. Only 9.8 percent of victims report it to the police. Victims of sexual assault are the group most likely to report they are not in good physical or mental health. (All from the Justice Departments study on sex offenders in Utah)
