Garden update

We planted potatoes yesterday. We’re trying the potato-in-a-bucket technique. Put the starts at the bottom of the bucket, and slowly cover it with soil as it grows, hopefully encouraging it to shoot potatoes out along the way. Then at the end of the season, after the plant has died, kick over the bucket and you have potatoes, and no digging required.
We started all out other vegetables in the basement a little over a week ago.![]()
The tomatoes, corn and thyme is doing great. Everything else is doing nothing, I’m afraid I may have overwatered. I had them covered with plastic to try to make a greenhouse kind of deal. This kept the water in and I think I started with a bit too much. Some of them look a little moldy.
I guess will see, I’ll start transplanting in two weeks.
I like the idea of starting your own seeds.
I took your suggestion of potatoes in a bucket and planted some potatoes last Saturday. As the season goes along, you can gently pull aside some of the soil and remove a few potatoes. Just cover the roots back up and more potatoes will come. We did this throughout the season last year (the potatoes were in the ground and we approached them from the side rather than the top) and it was very successful. We did use soil that consisted more of mulch that actual “dirt”. Sidney enjoyed harvesting potatoes with me. Wait until the potato plants bloom before searching for potatoes. Happy harvesting!
